The World Gemological Institute is dedicated to advancing
industry knowledge and standards for the benefit of diamond
professionals and consumers throughout the world. Toward
that end, we are collaborating with scientific researchers in the
departments of chemistry, physics, and earth sciences  at
leading universities.

The World Gemological Institute Provids research guidance,
funding, and providing rough and polished diamonds to our
academic partners, and is
committed to making its  joint findings
public. By promoting research, collaboration and transparency,
we are helping to shape
the future of the diamond industry.

WGI currently supports the following groundbreaking research projects at leading academic institutions:

•  Diamond Color Grading Using Spectroscopy: WGI is working with Professor M. Bonner
Denton and Professor Robert
Downs at the University of Arizona’s renowned mineralogy
lab to research diamond color in the normal D-Z color range using
advanced spectroscopy.
This project potentially can revolutionize the science of color perception and increase
the precision
of diamond color grading.

•  Analysis of Reflected Light Emitted from Polished Diamonds : WGI is supporting the
research of Professor Yeshaya
Yarnitsky, an internationally renowned expert in diamond
research at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. The project
team is analyzing
the light reflected by polished diamonds, seeking ways to define and gauge their brilliance
and fire.

•  Synthetic Diamond Surface Analysis : WGI is collaborating with Professor Alon Hoffman of
the Technion in his work to
analyze the surface composition and properties of synthetic
diamonds manufactured through chemical vapor deposition
(CVD) process. The goal of
the research project is to better understand the potential usage of CVD diamonds in
industrial
applications.
